Scotiabank Centre launches fall season with new ice plant and exciting events

Scotiabank Centre launches its fall season on Friday, October 4, with the opening home game of the Halifax Mooseheads, showcasing the venue’s new ice facilities and cooling systems – a multi-million-dollar upgrade funded by the Halifax Regional Municipality and the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP). This investment will ensure a high-quality on-ice experience for a variety of sporting events hosted at Scotiabank Centre.

Scotiabank Centre and the Halifax Regional Municipality began the renovation in spring 2024 to replace the previous ice plant with the largest Trane Technologies refrigerated ice production system installed to date in Canada. Installations were completed by Atlantica. The energy-efficient 200-piece mechanical system will reduce water, energy, and labour demands with consistent and state-of-the-art ice production at Scotiabank Centre. Improving the energy efficiency of this system aligns with HaliFACT, the municipality’s long-term climate action plan and help communities adapt to a changing climate.

This investment will also ensure Scotiabank Centre can continue to attract an exciting lineup of national and international ice events, which this year includes Skate Canada International (Oct 25-27), the Team Canada VS Team USA Women’s Hockey Rivalry Series (Feb 6, 2025), and the 2025 Curling Canada Trials (Nov 22-30, 2025). Scotiabank Centre will also host major concerts and entertainment through the 2024-2025 season including Jordan Davis, Sarah McLachlan, Arkells with Joel Plaskett, Our Lady Peace, and more.

FACTS

  • Renovations were funded by the Halifax Regional Municipality, complemented by funds from the federal/provincial Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, totaling $12.5M.

  • Scotiabank Centre’s new ice and cooling systems are the largest by tonnage installed in Canada, with over 200 pieces of Trane Technologies equipment including two 220-tonne chillers, three air-cooled roof condensers, and 21 CALMAC storage tanks.

  • The Trane system is centrally and electronically controlled with variable speed drives, designed to optimize energy efficiency, reduce water usage, and minimize labour.

  • The most comparable system in North America is in Denver’s Ball Arena, home of the Colorado Avalanche; Scotiabank Centre engineers will be trained there in November.
